R8 Exhaust Valve Functionality Solution

A client approached CADE Technologies after a software update disabled exhaust valve control on both of their Audi R8's Bosch MED17.1.1 Control Units without authorisation. CADE traced the cause, restored OBD programming and flashed modified firmware, bringing back full exhaust valve control within South Australian road use laws. The full process is broken down below.

How We Solved It

THE SOLUTION, STEP BY STEP

  1. Research4-6 weeks of CAN sniffing showed the vehicle restricts full exhaust valve control unless it is in Dynamic mode, a race setting limited in South Australia by supercar regulations.
  2. OBD access restoredNew security patches blocked OBD programming, so CADE decoded and modified the binary to restore OBD functionality.
  3. Firmware and bootloaderThe firmware version contained software table modifications with standards irrelevant to the Australian market. CADE implemented bootloader modifications to the Bosch MED17.1.1 Control Unit so the modified firmware could be flashed.
  4. ResultFull exhaust valve control restored, within South Australian road use laws.
