A client approached CADE Technologies regarding an issue with their Audi R8 after a software update disabled exhaust valve control on both Bosch MED17.1.1 Control Units without authorisation. After 4-6 weeks of CAN sniffing and research, CADE discovered that the vehicle restricts full exhaust valve control unless in Dynamic mode — a race setting limited in South Australia by supercar regulations.
OBD programming capability was blocked by new security patches. CADE decoded and modified the binary to restore OBD functionality. The firmware version contained software table modifications with standards irrelevant to the Australian market. CADE implemented bootloader modifications to the Bosch MED17.1.1 Control Unit, successfully flashing the modified firmware to enable full exhaust valve control within South Australian road use laws.
